You can really get a feel for the French culture here and how they so much enjoy their life. Beginning in the 19th century, Montmarte was colonized by artists; and artists such as Louise Michel, Corot, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, and Picasso have lived there.  <B>The Bateau-Lavoir </B>was their headquarters, a landmark building that was considered to be a ramshackle building reminiscent of a ships's gangways.</div> <bR> <bR> <DIV ALIGN="LEFT"></DIV> <div> <IMG SRC="55305260.jpg" border=0 width="261" height="550" ALIGN="BOTTOM" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0"></div> <div> Plaque on the Bateau-Lavoir-Montmartre</div> <bR> <div>  <B>The Place du Tertre </B>is a focal point in Montmartre which is described as a preserve of restaurants and artists. In the square, you will see many artists at work constructing art as well as doing portraits for the tourists.
